This is a script for the TCU’s Instagram channel that takes a fun, historical look at how the institution was founded in 1890 and how it has evolved — from paper audits to cutting-edge digital systems.

EN version

Did you know that Brazil’s Federal Court of Accounts is

one of the oldest public institutions in the country?

Like… really old!

[Starts to play a famous Brazilian song about Egypt]

Okay, maybe not that old — but let’s put things

into perspective.

When the TCU was created, Brazil was celebrating its

very first year as a Republic! The electric lightbulb was

just starting to be used around the world, and soccer

didn’t even exist in Brazil yet. The first official match

only happened in 1894, four years after the TCU was born!

It all started back in 1890, with the great Rui Barbosa

— a name you’ve probably heard before. Besides being

the father of the TCU, he helped write Brazil’s first

Republican Constitution, became the country’s first

Minister of Finance, translated Shakespeare into Portuguese,

and was a strong advocate for the abolition of slavery.

From paper to digital, from its first audits to today’s advanced

monitoring systems, the TCU keeps growing and evolving.

135 years later, honoring our history means thinking big

about the future!
